The Answer: "The South Plains District Industrial Switching Layout"

The Question: "How small can a switching layout be and still provide a challenging and entertaining operating session?"

David Barrow's modular South Plains District layout was documented in a series of four Model Railroader articles in 1996. The layout is complete with car cards and train orders. It is designed to keep two experienced operators busy for one hour.

All skill levels can enjoy this layout.

Experienced staff will be available to help.

The two 18" x 8' modules are joined end to end. The western module (Industry Yard) is between South Plains to the east and the larger Cat Mountain & Santa Fe Mesa Yard on to the west. The eastern module (South Plains) is between Industry Yard and the Burlington Northern going to Lubbock.

The plywood topped version of David Barrow's layout will be available in the 2007 LSR Convention Center during the entire convention. Groups or individuals may reserve one hour operating sessions by blocking out time slots on the Operating Session Master Schedule. Reservations may be made before the convention by contacting Mike Barrett at barrett@blackbearcc.com or 512-467-8400. Before the convention the schedule is displayed online at http://www.blackbearcc.com/SoPlains.htm
